Davis Success

Rachel's Story
The below letter is from the parents of Rachel, who attended a Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programme.

To Whom It May Concern:

We wish to express our whole-hearted endorsement for the Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programme. Our Daughter Rachel was fortunate enough to receive a programme in May 2004. We were nervous when we first arrived, like many other people we had already tried most of the usual treatments open to us. We had had extra tuition, specialist reading intervention, utilised the Bannantyne programme (through the school) and had completed a series in phonics. All to no avail. It was so discouraging to see our smart, creative and imaginative child struggle daily at school with things that seemed to come so easily to others.

We were finally told at the end of 2003 that Rachel was very possibly dyslexic (this was not an official diagnosis but it was enough to finally know what we were working with) We had previously been through a series of very extensive testing that had come back as totally inconclusive and therefore very unhelpful. We began to read everything we could find on Dyslexia and stumbled across Ron Davis’s methods through the internet. We ordered the book ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’. As we read this book it was as if our daughters’ life was reflected in the pages and we identified very strongly with it. We read all that we could find and the more we read, the more certain we became that this was the right course for us to take.

Initially we had been put off by the price, but after looking at all the money we had spent on extra lessons, tutors and tests and the money we would still need to spend we decided to take the plunge. Following that decision, our life is now divided into before and after the Davis Programme.

For Rachel (who was nearly 2 years behind her peers in almost everything, hating school and feeling increasingly unhappy) it has meant moving forward at an amazing rate (she is age appropriate in almost everything now, growing in confidence and looking forward to intermediate next year). Aspects of school are still difficult like the speed that everything is required and handwriting is still not easy. But she is in control now. She is comfortable in the school environment and experiencing success for the first time. She is happy with who she is and growing in confidence and trying new things. She no longer has to try and be invisible to survive.

Davis is not a miracle cure (although changes occurring during the week of the programme and following it can seem like a miracle). After the week long programme there is still lots of work to be done mastering all the trigger words. But this is not forever (1 year – 18mths) and if you set a realistic schedule and get the school on board then this is no problem and best of all it’s actually fun.

To address the few outstanding difficulties Rachel still experiences we plan to complete the Math Programme next year. Then we will simply watch our smart, happy, creative and imaginative daughter get on with life and be all that she can be.

Yours sincerely

Kerrie & Mark

Jesney's Story
The below letter is from the parents of Jesney, who attended a Davis Math Mastery Programme.

Our 10 year old daughter, Jesney had always been good at English comprehension, spelling and reading. So when it became apparent that she was struggling with maths, we thought she wasn't trying hard enough. It took two to three years of frustration before we realised she had some serious learning difficulties specific to her maths learning.

Fortunately, we heard about the Davis Maths Mastery Programme when Jesney was nine. She completed the five day programme with Lorna only one month ago. The change in Jesney's ability, attitude to maths learning and her confidence has been incredible. She has started a new school year at the same level as everyone in her class and sometimes comments that she is the first to finish or that she found the lessons easy. These are comments we would not have expected to hear a year ago.

If you are fortunate enough to hear of this programme or are able to send your child to a skilled facilitator then please accept the opportunity. The change will be amazing not only for your child but a wonderful learning opportunity that will change you as well.

Angus' Story
The below letter is from the parents of Rachel, who attended a Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programme.

Our son Angus, who is 9, has just finished a Davis Programme. We have been nothing but amazed at the progress he has made, and the confidence that he has developed.

After trying the more traditional methods for dyslexia for the last two years, both Angus and ourselves were very frustrated that he was making no progress, and had very low confidence.

We found it very hard to understand what dyslexia was, and what it meant for Angus.

By an amazing set of coincidences, we read about the Davis Programme recently in a newspaper article, and it immediately made us feel that there was something better out there to help Angus.

We were fortunate enough to be able to see Lorna Timms, the licensed Davis Facilitator in Christchurch.

Lorna has been abel to help Angus control his dyslexia and has opened up a whole new world for him. We spent six wonderful days with Lorna, and it has given me a much greater understanding of what it means to be dyslexic. Previously, we had no idea how dyslexics saw things, no one had been able to explain it to us.

Angus thoroughly enjoyed the time with Lorna, she made it fun for him, and made sure that both Angus and I understood each step that he went through.

By day four, I was in tears after hearing Angus beg to be able to read more from his book. He had never before asked to read a book, and found all sorts of ways to getting out of it. He read the book cover to cover with confidence and understanding. That meant the world to me.

In Angus' words, 'I'm a new boy now'. He is very proud of himself and so are we. We are so pleased to have found the Davis Programme, it has changed all of our lives for the better - forever.

Helen
